I was 22 when we launched VideoLectures.NET. No cloud credits. No AI copilots. No smooth startup story. Just a stubborn team, old servers, and a lot of "ship first, panic later" energy.
If you are building with AI today, it can feel like a different universe. In some ways, yes. In other ways, no.
You still need taste. You still need distribution. You still need to stay alive long enough to learn what works.
This is my 20-year scoreboard. What stayed the same from VideoLectures to AI agents, what changed, and what I wish someone had told me in 2006.
2006-2012: building before "startup" became a religion
VideoLectures.NET started with one simple belief. Great talks should not disappear after conferences end.
Today that sounds obvious. Back then it was odd.
Bandwidth was expensive. Video workflows were fragile. Browsers were inconsistent. If one thing broke, you felt it immediately.
What we built
- A platform for academic and conference video archives
- Ingestion workflows for talks from very different event formats
- Search and metadata that made long-form video usable
- A publishing process that worked with small teams and tight budgets
Nothing about this was glamorous. Every part mattered.
What I learned early
1) Distribution beats elegance.
A beautiful product with no reach is a hobby. We grew when institutions shared links and embedded talks.
2) Reliability is a feature.
Nobody congratulates uptime. They only remember downtime. That lesson never left me.
3) Boring operations compound.
Checklists, backups, naming rules. Dull on paper. Lifesaving in production.
2013-2019: maturity and the hidden cost of "one more project"
This period taught me a painful pattern. Shipping is fun. Maintenance is hard.
You can launch ten projects on motivation. You keep one alive with systems.
I moved between ideas, client work, and platform maintenance for years. Some bets paid off. Some died in six months.
The wins came from the same behavior:
- Talk to real users early
- Keep scope tight
- Kill weak ideas fast
- Keep the good ones boring and predictable
The failures were also consistent:
- Building for imaginary users
- Over-engineering before demand
- Delaying monetization because it felt "too early"

2020-2023: AI changed speed, but operations changed everything
Most people tell the AI story as a model timeline. GPT-3. GPT-4. Open models. Bigger context windows.
True, but incomplete.
For builders, the real shift was operational. AI let one person run workflows that used to need a small team.
I stopped asking, "What feature should I add next?" and started asking, "Which repetitive job should disappear next?"
That single question changed my business more than any model release.
Example: content pipeline
Before AI, publishing consistency depended on mood and available time.
Now the pipeline is role-based:
- Research agent collects source material
- Writer agent drafts to project rules
- Editor agent rewrites for quality and tone
- Designer/publisher agents format and ship
Is it perfect? No.
Is it much more consistent than human-only chaos mode? Absolutely.
2024-2026: personal agents became a real category
This year made one thing clear. "AI assistant" is no longer just a chat box.
Andrej Karpathy described OpenClaw-like systems as "Claws." Simon Willison amplified it, and the term started spreading in developer circles. Naming matters. Once a category has a name, adoption usually speeds up.

My practical definition of a Claw
A Claw is a personal AI runtime that can:
- Keep state over time
- Use tools, not only text
- Run on schedules or triggers
- Execute work with guardrails
- Report outcomes back to a human
That is not a toy. That is an operating layer.
What changed in 20 years, and what did not

AI will not rescue weak product thinking.
The cautionary tale worth studying
There is a hype version of AI coding and a production version.
The production version includes incidents.
The Financial Times reported that an AWS outage in December 2025 lasted 13 hours and involved Amazon's own Kiro coding tool in the incident chain.

My takeaway is simple.
Use AI to move faster. Keep human guardrails at critical boundaries.
I trust AI for generation. I do not trust unsupervised production changes.
That is not anti-AI. That is pro-not-breaking-everything.
The 7 rules I now use for AI-heavy projects
Operator note: These rules are from production incidents and recoveries, not theory.
These are earned rules, not theory.
1) Start with one painful workflow
If your first AI use case is vague, you will build noise. Pick one repetitive process that already hurts.
2) Add explicit guardrails before autonomy
Permissions, scopes, rate limits, and approval steps go in first.
3) Treat prompts like code
Version them. Review them. Roll back when needed.
4) Keep human sign-off at high-risk steps
Publishing, billing, destructive actions, customer messaging. Human check required.
5) Measure outcomes, not vibes
Track throughput, error rate, and time saved. "Feels smarter" is not a metric.
6) Write down failure modes
Every automation has an ugly edge case. Document it once and save yourself five future incidents.
7) Optimize for recovery
Assume something will break. Build rollback paths before you need them.
What I would tell 2006 me
If I could send one note back to the VideoLectures days, it would be this.
Build less. Finish more.
Your edge is not raw effort. Your edge is learning loops.
- Ship a smaller version
- Observe real behavior
- Fix one bottleneck
- Repeat
And keep your ops clean.
Starting is the fun part. Maintenance is the durable part. Future you will thank you for boring discipline.
Where this is going next
I do not think everyone will run fully autonomous agents next year.
I do think serious builders will run hybrid setups:
- Human judgment for strategy and risk
- Agents for repetitive execution
- Tight feedback loops between both
That model already works in my day-to-day work. It is not science fiction. It is Tuesday.
The bigger shift is cultural.
We are moving from "tools you click" to "systems that act."
Once you cross that line, your role changes. You are not only a maker anymore. You are also an operator.
Operators win long games.
